Set against the vibrant backdrop of modern-day Tokyo, Rental Family follows an American actor (Fraser) at a personal and professional crossroads. Struggling to find meaning in his life, he stumbles upon an unconventional opportunity—working for a Japanese “rental family” agency. His new job requires him to play stand-in roles for strangers, from a missing father to a long-lost friend.

As his journey unfolds, Fraser’s character begins forming authentic emotional bonds with the people he is hired to “pretend” to know. These encounters slowly blur the line between performance and reality, forcing him to grapple with the moral complexities of living in someone else’s story. Through these experiences, he rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the quiet yet powerful beauty of human connection.

Directed, co-written, and produced by Hikari, the acclaimed filmmaker behind 37 Seconds, the film boasts a stellar supporting cast including Takehiro Hira, Mari Yamamoto, Akira Emoto, and promising newcomer Shannon Gorman. The screenplay is penned by Hikari alongside Stephen Blahut.

The project is backed by Sight Unseen Pictures’ Julia Lebedev and Eddie Vaisman, along with Knockonwood’s Shin Yamaguchi. Known for its reputation in delivering heartfelt and thought-provoking cinema, Searchlight Pictures will distribute the film in India and worldwide this November.

Brendan Fraser, who was last seen in Brothers, steps into yet another complex role that explores themes of empathy and the universal search for meaning. The trailer has already generated buzz for its blend of touching drama and cross-cultural storytelling, with early reactions praising Fraser’s emotional depth and Hikari’s delicate handling of the subject matter.

With its mix of humor, pathos, and cultural intrigue, Rental Family is shaping up to be one of 2025’s most anticipated festival darlings and award-season contenders. Audiences can expect a story that will leave them questioning the boundaries between reality and performance—and perhaps, their own understanding of family.

Watch the trailer now and mark your calendars for November 21, 2025 — when Brendan Fraser invites the world to meet his most unconventional ‘family’ yet.
